For the scientific illustrations I have a great background in anatomy of a lot of different animals and I also use literature to ensure it is all scientific correct. I prefer pen/pencil on paper over digital drawing.

Project ‘Rhino’/’Education research centre and veterinary department Rotterdam Zoo

2022

When the vet clinic at the Rotterdam Zoo needed a change, I was the head veterinarian at that time and helped redecorating the clinic into a brand new jacket, very happy to be able to give my input in the whole project and to get the chance to show my creativity! Anatomy of the black rhino (Diceros bicornis)! The Education department of the zoo wanted a real size black rhino on the wall, layered so people could get an idea how rhino’s look like from the inside. Besides, they wanted to get some of the organs (heart, bladder, spleen, liver) in detail to make a large kids proof puzzle. On another wall in the public site of the research centre I have made a more simple drawing to zoom in on the cell and its content, the cell organelles, nucleus and the DNA!

Rotterdam Zoo/Diergaarde Blijdorp – Henk van den Berg did a fantastic job painting my pencil rhino and DNA explanation on the wall of the clinic and public room! Monique Spek was the projectleader and she did a great job on redecorating the vet clinic and brought Henk and me together.

Project ‘Snail anatomy, a dedication to prof. Zwart’

2022

Black and white snail anatomy in pencil. Was made on voluntary basis for Archaeopteryx, the veterinary study association for birds and exotic species as a dedication for prof. Peer Zwart.

Project ‘The Evolution of the Heart!’

2023

I am very passionate about anatomy, especially the comparative anatomy (between all species including human). Human and veterinary medicine collaboration is so important: There is so much we can learn from each other and from our ‘greatest architect’ nature! Very happy to contribute to this exposition both with my background as a vet and with my own illustrations!

Thank you very much for the nice collaboration DeVrijer and VanDongen, and thank you so much for the opportunity Erasmus MC and Natural History Museum of Rotterdam!

Want to see and learn more?

The Exposition in the Natural History museum of Rotterdam is open from 10-2023 to 09-2024!

The Rotterdam Zoo has a special route trough the zoo during this period.

Project ‘Perissodactyl lower limb anatomy’

2023

A big thanks to Melle van Iperen, Hooves and Horns-Hoefverzorging, for this nice project and good luck with (your final steps in) be(como)ing a great farrier for horses, tapirs, rhinos and more!

Project ‘My PhD’

2023-2024

I have not only written my thesis, but also illustrated it! Below a few sketches and illustrations which I made for my thesis.
